The impact of donor generosity is often measured through the experiences of students. At ºÚÁÏ¿Æ's annual Leadership Donor Reception on Thursday, October 15, student speaker Melia Pirog '28 shared how scholarship support has helped shape her journey as a first-generation college student and future educator.
An Elementary Education and Psychology major, Pirog spoke about finding her passion for teaching and her desire to make a difference in the lives of young learners. Throughout her time at ºÚÁÏ¿Æ, she has worked toward that goal both inside and outside the classroom, gaining the knowledge and experiences needed to pursue a career in education. As a recipient of the John Henri Endowed Memorial Scholarship, established by John ‘77BSBA and Diane Dame in honor of their fathers, John and Henri, she reflected on the meaningful role donor support has played in helping her focus on her studies, pursue her ambitions, and make the most of her college experience.
"You are not simply helping me earn a degree. You're helping me become the teacher I hope to be," Pirog told attendees.
Looking toward her future as a teacher, she reminded attendees that the impact of their generosity extends far beyond a single student.
"...Someday, when I am standing in my own classroom, your investment in me will become an investment in every child I have the privilege of teaching," Pirog said.
Her story served as a powerful reminder that the impact of philanthropy extends far beyond a financial contribution. Behind every scholarship is a student pursuing a dream, and behind every opportunity is a donor whose generosity helps make that journey possible.
During the reception, the University recognized several individuals whose contributions have made a meaningful difference across the ºÚÁÏ¿Æ community. Andrea St. James '96BSBA/'00MBA received the Community Service Leadership Award, which honors a faculty or staff member whose dedication positively impacts students and the broader community. The University also welcomed Dr. Minoo Tehrani into the Benefactors' Society and Brandon O'Brien '15BSBA/'16MBA into the Cupola Society.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Delbridge Family Spirit of Philanthropy Award to Steven P. Kitrosser '66BSIE/'70MBA. The award recognizes sustained and significant philanthropic service to ºÚÁÏ¿Æ. Through decades of leadership and philanthropy, including the establishment of the Steven and Elaine Kitrosser Industrial Engineering Endowed Scholarship, Kitrosser has helped make a Western New England education more accessible for students while strengthening the university for future generations.
"Recognizing Steven Kitrosser with the Delbridge Family Spirit of Philanthropy Award is a meaningful way to honor a legacy of service, leadership, and support that continues to make a lasting impact on our university and its students," said Joseph C. Hartman, President of ºÚÁÏ¿Æ.
While the reception honored outstanding service and philanthropy, Pirog's story brought those contributions to life. Her journey as a first generation college student to future teacher reflected the lasting impact donor support can have, not only on a student's education, but on the lives they will one day touch in return.
